Whom ever criticized Bono should wish they
had 1,000,000th of his talent and fame.
What stupidity, sounds like some of our
wonderful politicians on the right nowadays?

John! I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. You could be right, but I just don't get that he comes across preachy and pretentious. Boy, I can really resonate with anything extreme gets condemns. That's been the story of my life, lol! Jim Skafish

Well, I am certainly no authority on Bono - back when you had to choose between INXS and U2 I chose wrong and I have lived with that decision ever since - but I would theorize that all of the kind things that Bono does can appear pretentious and self-serving to the general populace.

We all agree that "stars" should be more actively involved in the community than they usually are. What they do now is one extreme, basically being self-centered for a living.

But doing the exact opposite – doing so many good things all the time, appearing almost completely “selfless”– can appear preachy to the uninitiated. And these days people don’t like to be preached at.

Looking at Bono in terms of Aristotle’s Golden Mean, I would posit that he is at another extreme – as far from being self-centered as you possibly can – and maybe that is just as unhealthy as being self-centered. Maybe being charitable and caring is somewhere between “doing nothing” and “doing everything.”

I think that’s why people don’t care for Bono, arguing that he is always looking for a camera, that he is pretentious, and so on. I think people look at that Angelina Jolie the same way. People question anything over-the-top. They question any extreme.

But having “stars” who are at Bono’s extreme – being almost dangerously selfless – is a good problem to have. He will eventually draw other “stars” away from their self-centered habits to a more healthy charitable demeanor, somewhere closer to his extreme. But Bono will have to suffer the slings and arrows in the meantime.

And again, I don’t know much about Bono, I have no issue with Bono, frankly Bono is not even on my radar – I’m just talking out my ass. Best wishes to him with his recovery.
