Clay! I don't know if I have the suitcase! God, that was such a long time ago! I love your story, too, about the clerk thought you were going to rob them! Jim

Wow that was fun to read Jim. Still have the powder-blue suitcase? I'll give you a thousand dollars for it! There was a time in my travels with the Slammin Watusis where we pulled into a gas station/convience store in Oklahoma City and the clerk immediately called the police because she thought she was about to be robbed.

Saw the Ramones back in '78 at one of my favorite venues, the Aragon. Their opening band, I fondly recall, was the Runaways. What a fabulous double bill. Your story is both funny and poignant, as I agree that Joey could have exploded the music scene, especially that genre, if he was still around. One of my favorite bands, I still miss them and listen to them often. Thanks, Jim

Great story! I think it is important that the history of punk rock/new wave be remembered by those who lived it. I remember visiting New York in the early 80s and checking out “Manic Panic”. They were selling Skafish buttons-the buttons had the picture of you from the front cover of your first album. It was very cool!

My friend Bill Herbst runs the Polyrhythmic Poetry Club in Chicago and I just remember a brow beating he once gave me when I raved about the Sex Pistols and he ranted and raved about how much they and every other punk band including the Clash was indebted to the Ramones. Years later I saw most of the documentary on them. Joey reminded me of Howard Stearns.
